  • Tambja morosa, also known as the Gloomy Nudibranch. This is a very difficult nudibranch to photograph since it is so dark but when you look close enough green hues start to stand out from the darker colors melding nicely with the royal blue markings of this striking nudibranch

  • Hypselodoris imperialis, the Imperial Nudibranch. These are one of my favorite nudibranchs to photograph. The richness of their coloration is enhanced by the contrast of deep purple speckled with gold.

  • Plocamopherus ceylonicus. I have only seen this nudibranch once in ten feet of water off the coast of Maui. The red protrusions are supposedly used for bioluminescence to light the nudibranch up as it swims through the water at night.

  • The gloomy nudibranch, or Tambja morosa, is a beautiful black and deep blue nudibranch that can be very hard to find in Hawaii unless you know where to look. My tip is to go muck diving! I have seen some close relatives to this nudibranch in Indonesia.

  • Bornella anguilla, or "eel nudibranch.' This has been seen only once in Hawaiian waters. I had to travel to tiny Gato Island near Malapascua, Philippines to finally find it. It is named the eel nudibranch because of the way it swims, undulating sideways through the water.

  • Pteraeolidia ianthina, the "Blue Dragon Nudibranch" is a beautiful kind of sea slug. In the Philippines this species is a vivid purple color underwater.
